in campbell. a fire was so intention crews had to take a defensive stance by starting at the top of the building. >> looks like the back half of the building is burned completely. the roof is gone, all of the property inside is gone too. it looked like it was a manufacturing, maybe battery electric type vehicle type of operation. >> the business in the front of the building a solar company suffered mainly smoke damage. >>> crews responded to a hotel fire alarm on the seventh floor of the courtyard mariott in campbell. it was about 2:00 a.m. and some of of the hotel guests said they were still asleep. >> emergency, get up, throw your clothes on and get out of the room and get downstairs and see what's going on. >> reporter: the hotel staff briefly evacuateed the fifth, sixth and seventh floors. the áfp fire officials tell us they believe a sprinkler either malfunctioned or was tampered with. >>> a man who lured firefighters to their deaths yesterday left a note about his planned act. 62-year-old exconvict william spengler set his home on fire then fired at firefighters who resp

campbell joins us from washington with the issues that still remain unresolved good afternoon, kyla. >> reporter: david, i just got off the phone with senate officials and they say there's no word yet on a possible vote today. with the hours ticking away, president obama came out to say a deal is in sight but it's not yet complete. vice president joe biden took over negotiations with mitch mcconnell yesterday after talks stalled between senate leaders. now, mcconnell said just minutes ago he wants to move forward on the tax offer and the latest democratic offer is to raise taxes on households making more than $450,000 a year. but there's still disagreements about spending cuts. >> that has been a good faith negotiation. we all want to protect tax payers. and can get it done now. >> we have to do this in a balanced and responsible way and if we're gonna be serious about deficit and debt reduction, there will have to have be some sacrifices. >> reporter: -- there have have to be some sacrifices. >> reporter: again, no votes have been scheduled at this point. kyla campbell, ktvu channe

to the desk. >>> we have some breaking news to cover a fire in campbell, just south of san jose, at a commercial building. we will bring you pictures and a live report and again this is in campbell. >>> they are suring up a levee as more rain approaches. they put down sand bags along the creek after the creek spilled over and water overflowed the levee prompting mandatory evacuation for several homes. >> they have some areas to create a circle around that area to make sure the water does not see under and they can control and die dirt it if needed. they are expected to rebuild the levee. >>> a winter storm warning for the west slope in the sierra goes into effect and snow is expected over the 880 corridor and right now chains are not required for interstate 880 or highway 50 but chains are required on other state routes. >>> a powerful storm is coming to the u.s. dangerous tornadoes are in the forecast from east texas to north florida and freezing rain sleet and snow are expected and blizzard warning is in effect in kentucky. >> ice is very tough. if you don't have any friction

. at least toward campbell. but as we worked our way toward evergreen and san felipe road you see significant rainfall on these bands. you touch on here an we show you rainfall bands at .2 an hour. that's significant rain and you head down toward the corridor and gilroy. they were getting hammered for a time today this evening and now they're getting a little bit of a break. but the rain came down hot and heavy there. the santa cruz mountains they're getting a lot of rain and it's coming down fast. as it stands right now, the showers are starting to die down, the worse is over. it was a fast moving system and we're fortunate it is coming down fast. it could have caused bigger problems but it migrated through rapidly. i'm going to be talking about showers still lingering, we're going to see you back here in a few minutes. >>> the rain now is actually helping to create a good supply of water for the summer. the santa clara valley water district says the intense but separatic storms have filled the south bay reservoirs to 102% of normal. >> last year we were in a deficit situation and we really

in campbell. ktvu was first on the scene just after 8:00 this morning. the commercial building housed two businesses. firefighters tell us they were forced to take a defensive stance. it took crews about an hour to put out the fire. the business in the back was a total loss. the other business suffered mostly water damage. >>> new york police say human remains found in the home of the man who lured firefighters to their deaths are believed to be the remains of the gunman's sister. police also say that 62-year- old exconvict william spengler left a note about plans to shoot firefighters. he left a note saying that he wanted to burn down the neighborhood and quote do what i do best, kill people. >>> netflix says it is fully back online after service problems that started yesterday. the outage affected users in the u.s., canada and south america blocking viewing services from many users. they blamedded outage on a server belonging to amazon and said an investigation is under way to determine exactly what happened. >>> a lot of people may be headed to the sierra for fun and snow. a a lot of

. >> i'm tori campbell. it's monday, december 31st, new year's eve. in overnight news, san francisco firefighters had their work cut out for them when a natural gas line burst outside an apartment that was on fire. flames shot in the air on athens around 1:00 this morning. ktvu's alex savidge joins us live from the scene with video you will only see on channel 2. alex? >> reporter: well, good morning. the fire inside of that home is what triggered a second fire that came from the curbside gas valve right outside the home. that's why you see pg&e crews still doing last-minute repair work to patch up the road where they had to dig things up to access that line. that second fire coming from the gas line certainly made things difficult for firefighters this morning, as the fire ripped through both floors of the home, and flames from the natural gas line shot 15 feet in the air. the homeowners had to wait for the pg&e to turn off the gas line. this started around 1:00 on the 100 block of athens street. there were four people inside the home at the time of the fire. two of them were sent t

claudine wong in for tory campbell. >>> topping our news at this hour we are learning more about that fatal officer-involved shooting in walnut creek, officers responded to the apartments on creekside drive and we are there live with new information on this investigation. >> reporter: the incident actually happened further back in the apartment complex but you can see they still have a large area roped off with crime tape while though continue to process the scene. walnut creek police say this started with a panicked 911 call at 3:15 this morning. they say they could hear screaming in the background, officers responded to a unit at the diablo point apartments where they were met by an armed man. they are giving few details about what happened next only that they felt threatened and fired their weapons and the man died at the scene. they are not saying what the relationship is between them but they say nobody else is at large. >> this is an incident connected there and no one else has any reason to feel unsafe. >> the officers are on paid leave, they are conducting an investigation. live in

toward campbell, blossoo m hill road. increase in the rainfall and the possibility of hail with some thunderstorms. keep that in mind at least in the short term. as far as temperatures, its cool. mainly in the 40s to around 50. santa rosa in 40. haywood 48 and san jose around 46 degrees. forecast for today, cool showers this morning, we will hold on to the chance of showers right on in to the afternoon with temperatures only maxing out in the low to mid50s. yesterday's storm, that cold front, today we have the speckled clouds off shore. that's a signature of cold unstable air and that will sweep in to the area for today. we will hold onto the sun, passing clouds and heavier downpours. here is the forecast model, 10:00 showing you scattered rain showers, it's doing a good job keeping most of the activity in the south bay. at one and also by three this afternoon. the coverage onto decrease, we could have clearing skies by tonight. between seven and eight. forecast highs this afternoon on the cool side only in the low to mid50s for santa rosa, fremont and san jose and a look ahead to th

clark is off today. >> yes, he is. >> good morning. i'm pam cook. tori campbell is also off. it's monday, december 24th. >>> we're following developing news out of marin county this morning where search-and-rescue teams are about to search for a missing man. alex savidge has more on how a traffic stop turned into a much larger situation. alex? >> reporter: well, now that the sun is coming up, the team is going to resume searching for this team, somewhere in the cordova creek. the man is suspected of drunk driving and ran from officers during a traffic stop. it happened earlier in the morning. he jumped into the creek in an area where the water is moving very quickly. authorities put a boat in the water right away to search the bas ofthe creek but there was no sign of the man. this all began after midnight when ross police made a dui stop on the man's car near sir francis drake and college. but during the field sobriety test, this man took off running from officers. officers watched him go in the creek and eventually lost sight of him. >> they followed for about 100 yards trying to encour
